MBBS Full Form

The full form of MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery as the name suggests is an undergraduate degree course involving a study of medicines and surgery. These are two separate degrees- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, under a single domain.

MBBS is one of the tough career options for students. After completing this course successfully, a student holds the right to carry the title ’doctor’ with their name. They may be also regarded as a physician. Their job demands the task of treating the illness of their patients with honesty, humility, empathy, compassion, and dedication.

The medical colleges and universities conduct the course. In India, the institutes must be accredited by the Medical Council of India, to be able to offer medical courses.

Eligibility Criteria

The student must have completed higher secondary (10+2) course with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. He/she should score minimum 50% in these subjects.

Selection process

If the student matches the eligibility criteria, he/she needs to appear for either any or all of the below-mentioned entrance exams:

  • National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET)- a national level examination conducted by CBSE, New Delhi.
  • AIIMS- conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
  • JIPMER- conducted by Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research.

Earlier, state level or university level examinations were conducted for admissions in MBBS course. But these examinations got banned by the Supreme Court, from the year 2016.

Duration of the course

The course requires 4.5 years of academic education and 1year of a mandatory internship.

Course Structure

The full course has been divided into nine semesters, which constitutes the study of subjects like biochemistry, anatomy, physiology microbiology, pathology, forensic medicine including pharmacology and toxicology. At the same time, the students obtain hands-on training in the wards and out-patient departments, where they interact with real patients for five years.

During the internship, an intern is made to learn overall practical medical treatment by rotation him/her across the various field.

Course fee

The tuition fee varies depending on the rank. The student may get into a government college or private college. The student also has the option of going abroad.

Career after the degree

The student has to write NEET (PG), and according to the marks and rank allocated, they can choose an area of specialization.
